The Treasure Principle Part 3

Mosaic Rockford – Dave Spooner – Jan. 22nd, 2017

Today is the final installment of this series called “The Treasure Principle” where we have been learning what God has to say about money and positions in light of eternity.  This is what we have covered so far:

  • Treasure Principle – “You can’t take it with you, but you can send it on ahead”
  • Key #1 God owns everything, I’m His money manager
  • Key #2 My heart always goes where I put God’s Money
  • Key #3 Heaven, not earth, is my home
  • Key #4 I should live not for the dot but for the line

Key #5 Giving is the only antidote to materialism

  • Materialism is a preoccupation with, or emphasis on, material objects, comforts, and considerations. It is a disease called affluenza . . . and it is making us really, really sick.
  • God Himself, tells us to

Heb 13:5-6 ESV

Keep your life free from love of money

1 Tim 6:9-10 HCSB

But those who want to be rich fall into temptation, a trap, and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.

  • Those who want to be rich fall . . .
    • Into temptation
    • Into a trap
    • Into many foolish and harmful desires
    • Into ruin and destruction
  • Love of money is the root of all kinds of evil . . .
  • And by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith . . .
  • And pierced themselves with many pains . . .
  • Having more will not cure it. Making more will not cure it.  Be poor will not cure it.  A change of heart will only do it.  And to change your heart we must give, because giving is the only antidote.
  • According to what has been communicated to us from God, there is three main categories of giving: Tithing, Offerings, Alms

  • Tithing

Lev 27:30-31 ESV

Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord’s; it is holy to the Lord.

  • A tithe is 10% – and it is the Lords

Mal 3:8-11 ESV

Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions. 9 You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. 10 Bring the full tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.

Ironically, many people can’t afford to give precisely because they’re not giving.  If we pay our debt to God first, then we will incur His blessing to help us pay or debts to men.  But when we rob Go to pay men, we rob ourselves of God’s blessing.

It’s much easier to live on 90 percent or 50 percent or 10 percent of your income inside the will of God than it is to live on 100 percent outside it.

Luke 11:42 ESV

But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

Every New Testament example of giving goes far beyond the tithe.  However, none falls short of it.  And the tithe always went to the house of God.

Acts 24:17 ESV

Now after several years I came to bring alms to my nation and to present offerings

  • Alms
    • Gifts given to the poor and those in need
      • Compassion, benevolence, food pantries, mission, people on the street

Acts 3:2 ESV

And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple

  • Offerings
    • Gifts given to special projects, events, ministries missionaries, etc.
      • Missionaries, mission trips, Pregnancy Care Center, Tutoring Club, Vbs, inner- varsity, Bridge ministries, Samaritans purse, Gideons, building programs, youth group, etc.
      • This is all over the Bible – 733 verses

Key #6 God prospers me not to raise my standard of living but to raise my standard of giving

2 Cor 9:6-12 ESV

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 Each one must give as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

  • What you sow is what you will reap (in the proper time)
  • Make up your mind – not reluctantly or under compulsion – God loves a cheerful giver
  • God gives us his grace – that we will have all sufficiency – so we can about in every good work

9 As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”

10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11  You will be enriched in every way for all your generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. 12 For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.

  • You will be enriched in every way for all your generosity
  • Which will produce thanksgiving to God

Luke 6:38 ESV

Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.

Acts 20:35 ESV

remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive”.

  • My prayer is that we will be obedient to Christ in all things, including our approach to money and possessions in light of Eternity. That we truly will be cheerful and generous and that God will continue to provide and bless you in all ways with the end result being the glory of God.
