Transformation – Guidance from God

Transformation Series, Part 4

God has been communicating with us from the very beginning and continues to do so throughout all time.  This message considers how He communicates and how we can best “tune in” to what He is saying and apply that knowledge to our everyday world.

Transformation Series Part 4

Guidance from God

Dave Spooner – Mosaic Rockford – Oct. 25th, 2015

Intro:

  • We are giving ourselves over to training in the spirit so that the transformational power of God will be evident in our lives making us more and alive, more fruitful, and more like Jesus.
  • Slowing and prayer and now guidance
  • God’s purpose in guidance is not just to get us to perform the right actions. His purpose is to help us become the right kind of people.
  • How God speaks, how we can listen and what we are to do with his words

When God speaks

  • Why is it when we talk to God, we call it prayer, and when God talks to us we call it schizophrenia or mysticism? . . . I know we have to be carful . . .
  • Christianity and Judaism for that manner, has a long and deep history of personal interaction with the divine.
  • Scriptural if full of example of God interacting and communicating with people both Old and New Testament

  • God speaks through his creation

Rom 1:19-20 NIV

What may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

His name was Jahaziel . . .15 He said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the Lord says:

For God speaks again and again, though people do not recognize it. 15 He speaks in dreams, in visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they lie in their beds. 16 He whispers in their ears and terrifies them with warnings. 17 He makes them turn from doing wrong; he keeps them from pride. 18 He protects them from the grave, from crossing over the river of death.

Tuning In

  • Longing soul

Ps 42:1-2 NLV

As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. 2 I thirst for God, the living God.

When can I go and stand before him?

Ps 63:1-6 NLV

1 O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water. 2 I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory. 3 Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you! 4 I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer. 5 You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy. 6 I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night.

Jer 29:13-14 NIV

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord

  • Pure heart

Matt 5:8 NIV

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

  • Open ears

Matt 13:11-16 NIV

“The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. 14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:

“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. 15 For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’

16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.

1 John 4:5-6 NIV

They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

Guidance and Application

  • When we face important decisions, we must pray, listen, seek guidance, and exercise judgment, wisdom, initiative, choice and responsibility.

  • Line it up with scripture . . .

Acts 17:11-12 HCSB

The people here were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, since they welcomed the message with eagerness and examined the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

  • Weight what is said . . .

1 Cor 14:29-33 NIV

Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.

  • Do what you know . . .

James 1:22-25 NIV

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

James 2:26 NIV

so faith without deeds is dead.

Conclusion

  • When you pray also listen – God does speak . . . . open yourself up to this . . . weigh it and follow
  • Next week – scripture and we will be gone . . .
  • Prayer people and pray
