Psalm 107 – Steadfast Love

Mosaic Rockford – Dave Spooner – March 10th, 2019

Intro:

  • God will help those who cry out to Him.  Let this truth sink in and thank God whose steadfast love endures forever!
  • This morning we are starting the 5thand last section of the book of Psalms. This section has the focus on God’s steadfast love as He delivers and redeems those who are His.  Psalm 107, our text for today, starts this section with a call to give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!

Ps 107:1-3 ESV
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! 2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble 3 and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.

  • We are to give thanks to the Lord because He is good!  God is good and His love which is consistent and steadfast is with us, forever! He shows His goodness and His mercy by redeeming (rescuing, delivering, saving) those who are in trouble.  All who call upon the Lord will be delivered from their distress.
  • Those of us who have been redeemed, delivered and saved from trouble are called upon to tell their story as a way to thank God for His steadfast love.  God responds to all people, from every corner of the earth, who cry out to Him for deliverance.
  • This psalm describes 4 groups of people who were in trouble and then moves to all those who are on the earth and what God does with them as well.  Four times in this psalm we read, “Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.”   This is the turning point in each of these sections. It is also a conditional promise: those who cry out to God will be helped by Him, and those who do not, will not. Why does God set it up this way? Why does He not intervene in all and every situation?  Because He wants a real relationship with real people who make real choices.  He wants us to understand who He is and what He is about so that we will experience and stay in His love by following after Him.  All of us fall into one of the following categories. Look for the one that you best fit. The first category is the drifters.

The drifters

Ps 107:4-9 ESV
Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; 5 hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. 6 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.7 He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. 8 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of men! 9 For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

  • These are people who wander about in life, from one thing to another, with no real direction and no real plan.  They drift from one thing to another, and one person to another.  Eventually, this takes its toll and they look for something more substantial and permanent to meet their physical, relational and spiritual needs.  They are in distress and they look for something more.
  • Because of these needs and this situation, they are in distress which causes them to cry out to the Lord.  God then delivers them by providing a way for them to have these needs meet (He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in).  Notice that He made a way possible for them and they then have to follow it.
  • They are told to “thank the Lord” because of His steadfast love, His wondrous works for people. That He satisfies the longing and the hungry soul by filling them with good things!
  • Perhaps you were in this class of people, and this is your story as well.  The second group is the prodigals.

The prodigals

Ps 107:10-16 ESV
Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons, 11 for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High. 12 So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help. 13  Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart. 15 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of men! 16 For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron.

  • These are the people who knew the words of God. These are people that more than likely grew up in a Christian home and went to church.  They chose to rebel against the words and counsel of God, thinking that their way was better than His.  So God gave them over to their way and bowed their hearts down with hard labor -their hearts became burdened and their lives became difficult. They fell down and became captive to addiction, to people, to debt, to the law and to sin.  They became “prisoners in afflictions” and were bound in irons – in the name of “freedom” they became slaves.
  • Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress! He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death. He burst their bonds apart and shattered the bronze doors of their prison and cut in two the bars of iron.
  • This may be your story as well.  Give thanks to the Lord for His steadfast love, for His wonderous works to the children of men!
  • The next group of people is the foolish.

The foolish

Ps 107:17-22 ESV
Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction; 18  they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. 19 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.20 He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. 21  Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of men! 22 And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!

  • These people did not grow up around the word of God or in church, but they were “fools” living on the edge, living for the weekend, living for the party, living a reckless life, living in their sin and sinful ways.  And because of their sin, they suffered affliction – that brought them close to death.
  • And when they cried out to the Lord, He delivered them from their distress.  He sent His Word, healed them and delivered them from their destruction.
  • Those who have been redeemed from this thank the Lord for His steadfast love and His wonderous works of deliverance!  Offer to God praise and thanksgiving – tell people of what He has done for you!!
  • The next group is the “industrious”- those who were trying to be decent persons and live their lives climbing up the financial ladder.

The industrious

Ps 107:23-32 ESV
Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters; 24 they saw the deeds of the Lord, his wondrous works in the deep. 25 For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. 26 They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; 27 they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end. 28 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. 29 He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. 30 Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. 31 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of men! 32 Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

  • These people were working hard and making progress.  They had some ups and downs and then life became bigger and stronger than them.  They lost their courage. They lost their balance. They lost their wits.
  • In this place they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress.  He made the storm be still, and He hushed the waves.  He brought gladness to their hearts and took them where they wanted to go.
  • If this is you, give thanks to the Lord for His steadfast love, His wonderous works to the children of men!  Give praise to God in the church for what He as done for you!
  • The psalmist lastly has a message for the people of the nations, as to how God works in the world.

The nations

Ps 107:33-42 ESV
He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, 34 a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants.35 He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. 36 And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in; 37 they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield. 38 By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish.

  • He is the God of the great reversals – He turns rivers and springs into a desert, He turns a fruitful land into a salty wasteland. He does this because of the evil of it’s inhabitants.  He also turns deserts into pools of water and parched land into springs!  He lets the hungry live there and establish themselves with a fruitful yield in all that is connected to them by His blessing.

39 When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow, 40 he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes; 41 but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks. 42 The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth.

  • We are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil and sorrow. He makes the leaders of the nations pay the price and then restores and raises up the oppressed.
  • Look for what God does in the earth!  Be glad for the work of God who restores the afflicted and deals with the wicked.
