Simon Says – A Study in 1st Peter

1 Peter 1:22-25 Living Love

Dave Spooner – Mosaic Rockford – March 15th, 2015

  • All of us at the core of who we are desire to be loved and to love deeply, from the heart. But I don’t think many of us reach this level of love in our lifetime, and if we do, it is with a very small number of people.
  • Yet the call to “love one another deeply from the heart” is the central command of Peter echoing the words of Jesus’ when he said “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another”. John 13:34-35 NIV
  • So if Christ commands it, Peter call for it, and we desire it, then why do we not experience more of it?
  • And even better, how can we experience more of it?
  • I believe the answer is found the passage we are looking at today.

1 Peter 1:22-25 (NIV)

Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart. 23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For,

“All men are like grass,

and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;

the grass withers and the flowers fall,

25 but the word of the Lord stands forever.”

And this is the word that was preached to you.

  • Everything before the phrase “Love one another deeply, from the heart” points to it and everything afterword also point to it. So in this passage is the key as to how we are to do this.
  • So In order to love one another deeply
  • First, This is what you need to know and I have tried to capsulize it into a phrase that should be easy to remember, so here it is

Those who live – Love to give

  • So here is what I mean by this . . .
  • “Those who live”
    • If you are a Christian you have been “born again” . . .
    • You are made alive “through the living and enduring word of God” with is “imperishable seed”
    • This means that you and now truly alive and that you will be this way forever – because with and in our flesh – all men are like grass and flowers of the field that both withers and fall – but now that we are born again through the living and enduring word that stands forever we now have been made alive in Christ and we will also stand forever.
  • So “those who live” then in turn love to give
  • If you are truly living then you will love to give
    • Love is in its essence about the other person –
      • 1 Cor 13:4-7 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.
    • love always gives
      • God so loved the world that he gave
      • Eph 5:1-2 (NIV) Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
    • So the essence of living is loving and the action of loving is giving
  • The proof that you have been born again is because you love
    • Because the “seed” that you have been born again with is of God and His nature is one of love.
  • Those who live – love to give – remember this – you need to know this.

Second and most importantly, This is what you need to do

  • Purify yourself by obeying the truth

    • Purify – purity is a state that is a result of an action – you have to clean house
      • Every impurity restricts us from seeing clearly
        • Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God
      • Every impurity restricts us from acting freely
        • let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles
      • Every impurity restricts us from loving deeply
        • of a cup/bowl with water and stones, etc.
      • Yourself – we are the ones who are responsible to do this
      • By obeying – this is acting (not knowing) the truth
        • Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up
        • Love is measured by actions not by knowledge
        • James – looking in the mirror and not doing anything
        • So this is a choice – by choosing not to be rude, by choosing to be patient, by choosing not be proud, by choosing not to be irritable, by choosing not to demand your own way
        • And this is a prayer – God help me to do this.
      • The truth
        • From God’s word
        • And about ourselves
      • And next week we will specifically talk about those things from the next verses
    • Be born again

      • We are all born of the flesh and then we can be “born again” of the spirit.
      • Conversation with Nicodemus in john chapter three
        • John 3:15- everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.

  • Imagine what your life would be like . . .
  • Imagine if all of us . . .
  • Those who live – love to give
