1 Peter 1:14-16 Obedient Children

Intro:

  • background as to who Peter is . . .
  • Last Sunday we started a section of scripture where Peter shifts his focus from eternal theological truths to practically putting these truths into practice.
  • His first focus area is in how we think, telling us to make sure our minds are ready for action – Christianity is not faith to hold but truths to live by – they we lived with self-controlled lives and that we set our hope fully in what is yet to come when Jesus Christ is revealed.
  • Peter then continues to say these things

1 Peter 1:14-16 (NIV)

As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Be obedient children

  • Family relationship . . . .
    • Children inherit the nature of their parents.
    • God is holy; therefore, as His children, we should live holy lives.
      • We are “partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4)
    • We are to be not acting on our own initiative – not telling God what we are doing but looking to him as to what we are to do . . .
      • The example of Jesus
    • Hearing the voice of the father . . . .
      • Spending time . . . blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God.
    • Believe and obeying always go together
      • True salvation always results in obedience

Rom 1:5

Through Christ, God has given us the privilege and authority as apostles to tell Gentiles everywhere what God has done for them, so that they will believe and obey him, bringing glory to his name.

  • Not just belief . . . this is how God is glorified in our obeying . . . people can’t see belief but they can see obedience
  • Now, we can also be disobedience . . .
  • So then he goes on to tell people what God wants them to obey . . .

1 Peter 1:14-16 (NIV)

As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Do not conform to evil desires

  • This is not an external battle but an internal battle
    • So there is two patterns – the external pattern of the world and also the internal pattern of desire
  • Control your desires don’t let them control you.
    • Being “born this way” is not a justification for doing anything we want.
  • This requires active resistance to the evil desires within us
    • They want us to give in to them
    • We “kill them” and weed them out by knowledge . . .
      • And to gain and retain the knowledge we have to have a heart that wants it

Eph 4:17-19 (NIV)

So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.

  • Perhaps romans one – Rom 1:18 But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness.

1 Peter 1:14-16 (NIV)

As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Be holy in all you do

  • Internal desires motivate external actions . . .
    • Your beliefs don’t make you a better person, your behavior does.
      • Even the devil believes . . . you can believe and still be a devil . . .
    • I think holiness is a forgotten concept in our modern society. We want to praise God in success but don’t want to be like God in living.
    • Or we can flip it around . . .
      • Not to be like the Pharisees . . .
      • We have to have integrity – we are the same on the inside as the outside
    • Our holiness comes from His holiness . . .
      • Tree by its fruit vine and the branch . . . .
    • Holiness is something that we are and something that we do

Conclusion

  • Be obedient children
  • Do not conform to your internal desires
  • Be holy and all that you do . . .
  • pray
