Simon Says – A Study in 1st Peter

1 Peter 4:7-11 Walking in the will of God Part 2

Dave Spooner – Mosaic Rockford – July 19th, 2015

Intro:

  • Connect with last’s weeks message – walking in the will of God
  • Arming ourselves with the same attitude that Christ did – to suffer (by not giving in to our flesh – which in turn making us done with sin by focusing on the will of God and not earthy desires by not participating in activities and withstanding the social consequences)
  • Combining what we should not be doing with what we should be doing
    • What is out of bounds vs. what is in bounds
  • So today we will hear Peter’s urgent instructions to us as to where we are to focus our lives in light of our limited time on this earth, which will bring us the most satisfaction and Him the most praise.

1 Peter 4:7a (NIV)

The end of all things is near.

  • The urgency of the end . . .
  • The power of focus . . .
    • a river, magnifying glass, a life
  • Therefore . . .

Focus on Prayer

1 Peter 4:7b (NIV)

Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.

  • Clear Minded
    • So many things in life clutter our minds . . .
  • Self-controlled
    • So many things in life clutter our actions . . .
  • So you can pray
    • This is where the power is . . .

Focus on Love

1 Peter 4:8-9 (NIV)

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

  • Love each other deeply . . . love convers over a multitude of sins . . .
    • Deep love covers sin . . .
      • Sometimes we want the sin to be exposed . . .
    • Sin does separate us . . .
    • Here is an application   . . .
  • Offer hospitality to one another . . . without grumbling
    • Let other people into your life . . .
    • Without grumbling

Focus on Service

1 Peter 4:10-11a (NIV)

10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides,

  • Use whatever gift you have received . . . to serve others
    • The gift is for you but it is not about you
  • Faithfully administering
    • We have the responsibility to administer the gifts . . .
      • If we don’t use the gifts we are limiting the gift and the grace of God
    • This is God’s grace in its various forms . . .
      • Giving to people something that they don’t deserve
      • Good grace of God is seen in the gifts he gives to other people to be used in society
    • For example
    • speaking as if you are speaking the very words of God – God as the source
    • serving . . . with God as the source of strength

So the end result is the glory of God

1 Peter 4:11b (NIV)

so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

  • In living like this God will be praised and glorified
  • This should be the desire of every Christian because the Holy Spirit lives in us looking to glorify the son and the son glorifies the father
  • And if we are not living with these focuses . . . we have to ask ourselves are we living to glorify something or some else . . .

Conclusion

  • These are the places we are to focus
  • Prayer, Love and service
    • So how are you doing in these areas?
  • These places are where Jesus focused his life – in prayer, in love, in service.
