Message 5 Only Jesus Part 2 Col. 1:17-20

Mosaic Rockford – Dave Spooner – Sept. 11th, 2016

Intro:

  • Today we will continue to focus on Jesus, who he is and why this matters.
  • There is a lot of confusion around who he is and there is a lot riding on his identity.
  • Jesus is uniquely different than everyone and everything. Paul makes it plain, who He is.
  • Review of where we have been –
    • Only Jesus is the image of the invisible God
    • Only Jesus is the firstborn of all creation
    • Only Jesus is the creator of all things
    • Only Jesus is the reason for all things

Colossians 1:17-20 ESV

And he is before all things,

Only Jesus is the one before all things

  • Before in order and before in importance, and he should be in our lives as well. He is not created, – he is eternal.
  • Why does this matter? – This helps us to correctly order our priorities, placing Him before all things. It also should increase our respect, honor and approach of him.  He is truly God and the only one before all things.

and in him all things hold together.

Only Jesus is the sustainer of all things

  • Not only is he before, but the story of life and even matter itself, is held together in him. Without him holding it together, it would all come apart.
  • Why does this matter? If you feel like you and your life is coming apart, ask him to show you the pattern, what He is doing, and how he is keeping it together. He is actively involved in all of life, and by this God showing his general love to all.

18 And he is the head of the body, the church.

Only Jesus is the head of the body, the church

  • He directs, leads and cares for us. He is the leader of the church and this church.
  • Why does this matter? – We must defer to him in the church, we submit ourselves to him, and he guides and directs us.  This is why we submit ourselves to his word and his way.  This is why knowing the will of God is so important.  We don’t lead him, he leads us.  This is why doctrine matters.  If we are in misalignment with the head, we are sick, if we are disconnected from the head, we are dead.  We must be correctly connected with him for maximum effectiveness.

He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.

Only Jesus is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead

  • He is the beginning – the first of many that will rise for the dead. This is not for him only, but for all of us.  This is not coming back to life (with the same body that will die again), but resurrected with a new body that can live forever.
  • Why does this matter? This gives us assurance and confidence as to what happens to us after we die. We will be like him and have a resurrected body like him.
  • In everything He is preeminent – eminent above or before others; superior; surpassing: distinguished, peerless, supreme –
  • Why does this matter? – because there is no one like him – no one has been resurrected from the dead. It sets him apart from all other “God”.  This mean that it is true that he is the “resurrection and the life”.  This should give us udder confidence in him, his word and our ultimate future.

19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,

Only Jesus is the fullness of God

  • He is all God – in human form. Not half and half / not the spirit on the man / but fully God – fully man.
  • Why does this matter? – clears up misperceptions of him. We can concretely know what God is like buy knowing Jesus.  God the father is different in role but same in nature as Jesus.  God is not one way and Jesus is another.  Because he was also human, this means that he experientially knows what we go through.  He understands, empathies and speak with experiential authority. He also provides our example of how to live as a human.

20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross

Only Jesus is the reconciler of all things

  • we need to be reconciled (connected back together to bring into agreement or harmony; make compatible or consistent)– why, because we are rebels. Jesus made peace by his blood and Jesus is the only way to the father, and did so because of His great love.  He made the way and he is the only way.
  • Why does this matter? – there is no other way to the father . . . we need to turn to him, God wants peace and relationship with us, so he does not have to destroy us, and that we can have peace with God, and be at peace within ourselves because of him.
