Intro:

  • Today we finish our yearlong study of Romans, and what a tremendous journey it has been! We have systematically covered major theological themes and Christian doctrines: sin, salvation, grace, faith, righteousness, judgment, justification, sanctification, salvation, redemption and resurrection.  We have studied sovereignty, calling, election, wrath, creation, the law, the role and work of Christ, the ministry of the Holy Spirit, the Christian hope, the nature of the church, the place of Jew and Gentile in God’s purposes, the meaning and message of the Old Testament, the significance of baptism, the principles of personal devotion, ethics, and Christian fellowship and that is not all. It took me a year to go through all of it . . .  my hope is that you have a solid biblical faith and understand more fully the glory of the gospel.
  • This whole letter was written “to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations.” (Rom 1:5 ESV) This is to be the end goal of all theology: obedience of faith . . . for the sake of his name . . . among all the nations.
  • We conclude today coming full circle, returning to the original purpose for writing. Paul concludes with a prayer, that you would be strengthened by God through the revelation of the gospel and to be obedient in your faith, for the glory of God through Jesus Christ forevermore. Let’s read these verses together.

Rom 16:25-27 ESV

Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages 26 but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— 27 to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.

Be strengthened by God

  • Now to him who is able to strengthen you – God is able to strengthen you – this is what He can do, what He is able to do, and what He is willing to do. He has an overabundance of strength and gladly gives it to all who seek it.
  • The strength of God is delivered to us through the gospel, through the truth of who God is and what He has done for us. This is how God’s strength is given to us.  Knowing who He is, knowing how He functions, knowing what He has done, knowing what He has given us, and knowing what He has prepared for us – in these things we receive and have strength.  God’s power comes to us through the preaching of Jesus Christ, not through self-help or 5 ways to improve your life, but through the power and blood of Christ Jesus to transform lives.  “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:13 ESV)

Rom 16:25-27 ESV

Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages 26 but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God,

Through the revelation of the gospel

  • Revelation of the mystery – the plan of God through the Son of God is show the revelation of God – there is no other way. We must pray that people see the revelation of who Jesus really is because without this revelation, they will get him wrong. People think many things of Jesus, but to know who He really is takes a revelation

Matt 16:15-18 ESV

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”  16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

  • The mystery of Christ has been kept secret for ages – from the beginning of time until the appearing of the Son. It has been foretold through the Old Testament and has been made know in the incarnation and resurrection. It has been and is being proclaimed to all the nations.
  • This was preordained and commanded by the one who is eternal, the one who was before all things and created all things. God unfolds the story of His glory and does what he does at just the right time. This is true of the past and will be true of the future when the timing is right for the son to be revealed in all His glory.  God wills His plan to go forward and His plan will go forward because it is His sovereign will.

Rom 16:25-27 ESV

Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages 26 but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith

To be obedient in your faith

  • Faith is seen and expressed in obedience to God. Faith is seen in what you do.  That is the real and true revelation of your faith.  Don’t fool yourself thinking that faith is something of the head and the heart only. It must be in our hands and our feet as well.
  • We are to live in obedience of faith. Our faith is seen and evidenced in what we do.  This means we must live out what we believe in practical ways . . . this is how faith makes a difference so that in it the chief aim of bringing God glory through Jesus Christ forevermore will be accomplished.

Amen.

For the glory of God through Jesus Christ forevermore

  • God the Father, who is revealed in the scriptures, is the only wise God. What He does is wise because it is who He is. His ways and His timing are perfect. We will know this fully in the passing of time.  Do you trust Him? Will you trust Him in all things?  Do you have faith, keep the faith, and demonstrate the faith in all things and in all times? Surrender yourself fully to obedience of faith for the glory of the only wise God.
  • God’s glory comes in and through Jesus Christ “whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” (Heb 1:2-4 NIV)
  • May God the Father and Jesus Christ His Son be worshipped, praised and obeyed forevermore. Amen!

Conclusion

  • Be strengthened by God through the revelation of the gospel, to be obedient in your faith for the glory of God through Jesus Christ forevermore.
  • The scripture is given to us to bring about obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations – give your life fully to Him, live your life fully in him, trust him, honor him, love him, follow him. He is worthy of all praise and worthy of your very life. We will have increasing joy with Him and in Him forevermore!
  • Hopefully you have been strengthened, encouraged and built up in your faith because of this study. May the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
