NOTES

Keep the Faith Part 8

Love One Another 1 John 3:11-21

Mosaic Rockford – Dave Spooner – Feb. 21st, 2016

Intro:

  • Our focus this Sunday is centered in how living connected to Christ changes us. When we enter into the life of Christ and abide in Him, we move from death to life, closed to open, condemned to confident.
  • We are going to see this word “abide” a number of time as John continues to give us reassurance of our salvation.

From death to life

1 John 3:11-15 ESV

For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 12 We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

  • From the beginning – this was the original message and continues to be the message . . .
  • We know we have passed from death to life if we love – from life taker to life giver . . .
  • Do not be surprised if the world hates you . . .
  • If you do not love you abide in death . . .
  • If you hate then you are a murderer and if you are a murderer you do not have eternal life abiding in you . . .
  • So do you have hate in your heart – you need to confess it, forgive, ask God to heal you and ask God to fill your heart with love

From closed to open

1 John 3:16-18 ESV

By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

  • Lay down our lives – is not asking for anything in return – we must lay down our lives for our brothers . . . just because we love . . .
  • Closed heart verses an open heart
  • Example of material things- this is how we can express love to each other – meet people’s physical needs
  • Our love has to go beyond our words and must be expressed in deeds and in truth
    • Talk is cheap – actions is what matters

From condemned to confident

1 John 3:19-24 ESV

By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; 20 for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; 22 and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in him, and he in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

  • Ask the Lord if there is anything between Him and you
  • A clean heart gives us confidence before God
    • And if we have a clean heart and keep his commandments and live to please him we receive things from him because we are praying according to His will . . .
      • And His commandment is – believe in the name of God’s son Jesus Christ
      • And love one another
    • Then we know that we are abiding in Him and he is abiding in us – because his Spirit lives in us – and if we are living by His spirit living in us we will love . . .

Transition – God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son – that whoever believes in him will have ever lasting life . . .
