Children of God

Keep the Faith, Part 7, 1 John 2:28-3:10

This message considers how to “abide in Christ” and what this means in our day to day living.  Who Jesus is, is what we are also to be.   And in so doing, we will have victory in life and will stand in confidence when we see Him face to face.

Keep the Faith Part 7

Children of God 1 John 2:28-3:10

Mosaic Rockford – Dave Spooner – Feb. 14th, 2016

Intro:

  • Today’s message is vital for anyone who desires to stand before Christ in confidence when He returns
  • This is the one thing that we must do – “abide in him”

1 John 2:28 ESV

And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.

As children of God we are to abide in him

  • Abide – to stay; to remain
  • How are we to “abide”? – John 15:1-17 the “vine and branches”
    • Receive His Word – Reproduce His Love
      • If we are in him, then his word is in us

John 15:7a

abide in me, and my words abide in you

  • Obey His command to love each other

John 15:10a; 12

If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love . . . 12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

  • Results of doing this
    • Bearing fruit that will last –
      • We can only do this by abiding . . .
        • Apart from me you can do nothing (John 15:5)
      • And the fruit will last
        • John 15:16 NIV

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit — fruit that will last.

John 15:8 ESV

By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.

  • Which gives glory to God
  • Which gives proof that you are a disciple

  • “When he appears” – this is not “if” but “when” it is a sure thing
    • When we abide – we will have confidence in standing before Him
    • If we do not abide – there will be a pulling back with shame

If we abide in Him – we are in Him and He is in us – we will be like Him – He is righteous so we practice righteousness, He is pure so we purify ourselves, He is sinless so we abandon sinning.

1 John 2:29 ESV

If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.

He is righteous so we practice righteousness

  • Because we abide in him – we become like him – further evidence of being in Christ and receiving salvation
  • Everyone who practices righteousness
    • Righteous – is something that we are that is evidenced in something that we do
    • Put this into practice – live righteously – do what is right . . .

1 John 3:1-3 ESV

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

He is pure so we purify ourselves

  • So what He is – is what we are to be.
  • We are the ones who are responsible for our purity
    • Purity comes by filtering – taking the bad stuff out . . . (like water)
    • Desires, thoughts, attitudes, characteristics . . .
  • So we do what is right and filter out what is wrong

1 John 3:4-10 ESV

Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

He is sinless so we abandon sinning

  • This is a conscience choice in our actions to not do things that are sinful
  • So we do what is right, purify our lives and don’t participate in what is wrong
    • of messing up the house vs. cleaning the house

Conclusion

  • Abide in Him – receive his word – reproduce his love
  • He is righteous so we practice righteousness
  • He is pure so we purify ourselves
  • He is sinless so we abandon sinning
