Leaving a Legacy

Joshua: Gaining Ground, Part 8

The truth is that today’s footprint is tomorrow’s legacy.  You can leave a very good one.  This message will show you how.

Joshua: Gaining Ground

Part 8 Leaving a Legacy Joshua 23 & 24

Mosaic Rockford – Dave Spooner – June 5th, 2016

  • At some point, all of us will come to the end our time here on earth . . .
    • Imagine yourself there . . . what do you want to say, what do you want said about you, what can you do to help those who are coming after . . .
    • Imagine what you want to feel and what you want to think and what you want things to be like . . .
    • Today’s footprint is tomorrow’s legacy

Leave evidence of God’s goodness

Josh 23: 1-4 ESV

A long time afterward, when the Lord had given rest to Israel from all their surrounding enemies, and Joshua was old and well advanced in years, 2 Joshua summoned all Israel, its elders and heads, its judges and officers, and said to them, “I am now old and well advanced in years. 3 And you have seen all that the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake, for it is the Lord your God who has fought for you. 4 Behold, I have allotted to you as an inheritance for your tribes those nations that remain, along with all the nations that I have already cut off, from the Jordan to the Great Sea in the west.

  • Looking back on your life, what evidence do you see of God’s goodness?
    • In your situations and circumstances . . .
    • In your relationships and character . . .
    • In your accomplishments and achievements . . .
  • What do you want to leave behind with the rest of your life . . . . what is it?
    • Focus in on doing those things . . . now and going forward

Leave a vision for the future

Josh 23: 5 ESV

The Lord your God will push them back before you and drive them out of your sight. And you shall possess their land, just as the Lord your God promised you.

  • This is what I see God doing through you and for you . . .
  • Paint a picture of what you see and possibilities of the most desired future

Leave final instructions

  • So what are your final instructions going to be? What is the most important thing you could say?

 Josh 23: 6-8 ESV

Therefore, be very strong to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor to the left, 7 that you may not mix with these nations remaining among you or make mention of the names of their gods or swear by them or serve them or bow down to them, 8 but you shall cling to the Lord your God just as you have done to this day.

  • Be strong to do what the Bible tells you to do, don’t stray from it and do not mix with the nations that you find yourself in bowing down to their gods . . . and the other gods will destroy you . . .
    • Keeping God’s word and clinging to Him will keep you from bowing down to the world’s god
      • The gods of money . . . so we give it away
      • The gods of power . . . so we take on the nature of a servant
      • The gods of self . . . so we die to ourselves daily
      • The gods of now . . . so we live for the future

Josh 23: 14 ESV

“Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

  • Fear the Lord . . .
  • Serve Him – with sincerity . . . . and faithfulness . . . .
  • Put away the “gods” of your ancestors . . .
  • Choose who are going to serve . . . because you will serve something or someone . . .

  • You are going to leave – the question is what will you leave
    • Choose to leave evidence of the goodness of God
    • Choose to leave a vision for the future
    • Choose to leave instructions that will guide others

Josh 23: 31 ESV

Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua and had known all the work that the Lord did for Israel.

  • Choose this day who you will serve . . . as for me and my house – we will serve the Lord.
  • Closing Prayer
