Defining Moments

Joshua: Gaining Ground, Part 2

There are moments in our lives that will define who we are and determine our destiny.  This message gives us the tools to discern which way we are to go.

Joshua: Gaining Ground

Part 2 Defining Moments Numbers 13 – 14

Mosaic Rockford – Dave Spooner – April 24th, 2016

  • Application to last week’s message (Personal / Relational / Occupational)
  • There are every day decisions and directions and then there are moments in our lives that are “defining”. This is a decision will define us – a before and after . . .
  • Today we are going to look into a Defining Moment in the life of Joshua and gain tools to help up make good decisions in times of transitions

Times of Transition

Num 13:1-2 ESV

The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel. From each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, everyone a chief among them.”

  • The decision will determine your direction and effect your destiny (give examples Marriage / Kids / Move / Occupation / Education / Business)
  • God will test us at times
    • To give proof as to who we are
  • Why to spy? Why not just tell them to go in?
    • God is looking for a partnership
    • God is looking to develop us

Gather the Facts

Num 13:25-29 ESV

At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. 26 And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.”

  • Take time to look at the facts
    • Keep it objective
    • Measure things fairly
    • Both Positive and Negative

Discern your Lenses

Num 13:30-33 ESV

But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” 31  Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” 32 So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”

  • Ask yourself – am I seeing this through lenses of faith or lenses of fear?
    • Faith Sees:
      • Resources – “we are well able”
        • What are the resources / gifts / experience / accomplishments?
      • Results – “to overcome it”
        • knows there is going to be a battle
        • but believes the difficulties will be overcome.
      • Rewards – “let us go up at once and occupy it”
        • Let’s go now
        • Focus on the reward of the victory
      • Faith sees resources, results, rewards and acts

  • Fear Sees:
    • Deficits – “we are not able – they are stronger”
      • Minimizes the resources
    • Disasters – “The land devours its inhabitants”
      • Manipulates the results
    • Defeats – “All the people are of great height” “we seem to ourselves as grasshoppers” “So we seemed to them”
      • Maximizes the problems
    • Fear see deficits, disasters, defeats and retracts

Reap your Results

  • Fear

Num 14:1 -10 ESV

Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. 2 And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!  . . .

10 Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. . . non shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it

  • Crying, weeping, grumbling, division, aggression, regression, regret, defeat, death

  • Faith

Num 14:30-31

not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

  • Joy, thanksgiving, unity, victory, peace, freedom, life, liberty, legacy,
  • Because of the fear of others, there may be a delay.
