NOTES

Catch the Wind

Mosaic Rockford – Dave Spooner – Jan. 1st, 2017

Intro:

  • Move forward in your life this next year
  • I believe the “wind of the spirit” is moving and we want to catch it to move forward . . . feel and see the affects – but you can no see it
  • Climb aboard one of these three ships to move from the island to the mainland

Move from isolation to community by fellowship

  • Move from the island of isolation to the mainland of community by climbing aboard fellowship
  • Why isolation is bad
    • Vulnerable to attack, limited in perspective, limited resources, no shared experiences
  • Why community is better

Eccl 4:9-12 ESV

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! 11 Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? 12 And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

  • Strength in numbers, broad in perspective, sharing of resources, sharing of experiences

  • Fellowship in made by sharing . . .

1 John 1:7 ESV

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another

  • Sharing – ups, lows, resources, heart, mind . . .
  • Intentionality, transparency, time . . .
  • This is one of the main components of organizational health (healthy people and churches)

Acts 2:42 ESV

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

Move from ignorance to maturity by discipleship

  • Move from the island of ignorance to the mainland of maturity by climbing aboard discipleship
  • Why ignorance is bad
    • You make bad decisions, you end up hurting yourself and others, wasting time, energy and resources, – spiritually speaking – lose your way (tossed to and fro), fall into ditches, rob yourself of joy and reward, not fulfil your potential
  • We were commanded to make disciples (not converts)

Matt 28:19-20 ESV

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, tor the end of the age.”

  • How does discipleship happen? – by teaching and learning

2 Tim 2:2 ESV

what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

  • By seeing and doing

Phil 4:9 ESV

What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things,

Move from idolatry to reality by worship

  • Move from the island of idolatry to the mainland of reality by climbing aboard worship
  • What is worship? – seeing the “worth” of something . . . setting it apart as above, other, sacred

Ex 20:3-11 ESV

You shall have no other gods before me.

You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything . . .

You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain . . .

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy . . .

  • What is idolatry and why idolatry is bad?
    • Limited, (we become like what we worship), not perfect, dangerous, destructive, deceptive
  • Why reality is better
    • God is the creator, he is the helper, he is perfect, he is powerful, he is true
  • How do you worship?

John 4:23 ESV

But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.

  • In spirit . . . and in truth . . .
  • We do this by – understanding, singing, giving, serving, by acknowledging, by praying, submission
